“There used to be something of a tradition at our house—Saturdays around 10 a.m., a warm stack of pancakes on the plate, sweet aromas drifting through the kitchen. Back then, when the girls were little, they’d wait for me to make them. Now they’re grown, making them on their own, and I just hear the sounds from the kitchen and feel the continuity.

On sleep-deprived mornings, pancakes always looked to me like pillows—soft, warm, inviting me to rest my head for just a moment. But there was no time. There was always another batch, someone waiting, eyes sparkling with anticipation.

This illustration captures exactly that: the moments when we give of ourselves—cooking, caring, bringing joy. Sometimes tiredness joins in, sometimes a quiet frustration with the repetition of giving. But then, in a rare moment of calm, someone takes a bite, smiles at me with a full mouth, and I know—it’s worth it. And today, when they’re the ones standing there flipping pancakes, I know it’s been passed on.”*
